“Concept: A single photograph of an artist expressing their entire “vibe” in one direct defining look. Sometimes its those iconic shots that help separate Thom Yorke, Bjork, Patty Smith, Bob Dylan etc from everyone else in your mind. But just as few artists move you to learn their words, even fewer photographers are finding room to stand up and stand out.

In a world of instant art, I find myself yearning for authenticity. Individuality. Strength. Realness. Heart. And recently I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with two photographers that rock the concept.

Through their work they seem to marry you to the subject. In the case of A. Dola Baroni, a local bad ass babe who spends a good chunk of her time snapping musicians, we as an audience to her work are exposed to her personal relationship with dance, her dedication to artistic expression and sharp old fashioned honesty. There’s an undeniable chemistry that pulls photographers towards the impossible. Relaying the spirit of a subject, inside one moment of their ever blooming continuous flow.

I’m not a scholar, I’m a poet. I’d be the first girl in line to drop my camera on the floor but in all my experiences posing for various musical components I’ve very rarely been impressed. This woman should be moving up fast, and although I have a feeling she’d hate a comparison of any sort … I gotta give it to her.  A. Dola Baroni is MY next Brian Duffy.

The TVD First Date

“It’s because we’re supposed to be inspiring each other, not jerking off and cramming it onto an LP. Real metaphors. I worked at Streetlight Records in Santa Cruz, California for 4 years after high school. Slinging vinyl was a coveted role and no aspiring young Beat like myself would look down on Streetlight’s selection. All good girls know there’s a big importance in protecting and sharing records. Fine records enhance the mind and what good are thick sticks if you’re running the ship with earwax?

I bought Cat Power’s Dear Sir LP after hearing the track “Mr. Gallo” on a rainy day. It wasn’t my first record but it was the first to be listened to front to back. It’s the type of record you sit down and you listen to. I mean you let it get at you—it’s your world for the hour. So it was then I knew how strong the concept of an album was. And it was then that I fell in love with vinyl as a format.

It was tremendously different from plugging in and zoning out to music on my computer. This makes me think we as a collective or as individuals should try harder to introduce friends to records.

Collecting records is both engaging and private. How do I convince whoever’s reading to go out and pick up Black Sabbath’s eponymous debut?”
